The stunning Glass House Mountains are a cluster of eleven peaks located on the Sunshine Coast’s coastal plain, 76 kilometres from Brisbane. Mount Beerwah – which rises an impressive 556 metres above sea level – is the tallest of the eleven; however, Mount Tibrogargan is undoubtedly the most recognisable, with some people claiming it looks like a silhouette of a human face, staring longingly towards the ocean.

The other peaks – all of which are protected under the Glass House Mountains National Park – are Mount Beerburrum, Mount Coochin, Mount Ngungun, Mount Tibberoowuccum, Mount Tunbubudla (The Twins), Wild Horse Mountain (Round Mountain), Mount Elimbah (The Saddleback), Mount Coonowrin (Crookneck) and Mount Miketeebumulgrai. While the majority of these mountain names are ancient Indigenous names, the name ‘Glass House’ was actually given to these peaks by Captain James Cook, who thought they looked like the glass furnaces in Yorkshire, his homeland. The Glass House peaks also hold cultural significance to the Gubbi Gubbi Indigenous people, who consider the mountains a family in Dreamtime stories.

The Glass House Mountains National Park is a haven for nature lovers, with Tibrogargan and Ngungun – both open to the public – offering a plethora of bushwalking options ranging from easy to extremely difficult. The lookouts atop these peaks offer stunning views over the lush forest to Caloundra, Maroochydore, Brisbane and Moreton Island. Visitors can also try rock climbing, abseiling and horse riding throughout this scenic wonderland. From the Glass House Mountains, you can venture out to the infamous Australia Zoo to visit some crocs and other wildlife, or you can visit Fraser Island, Moreton Island, Hervey Bay, Caloundra, Noosa the Sunshine Coast hinterland or more!
