Jim Jim Falls Tours
Situated within the amazing World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park, 349 kilometres (217 mi) southeast of Darwin and 28 kilometres (17 mi) south of Jabiru, Jim Jim Falls – known as Barrkmalam in the local Indigenous tongue – is a gorgeous plunging waterfall that cascades over the Arnhem Land escarpment. Dropping from an elevation of 259 metres (850 ft.) and splitting off into various levels ranging from 140 and 200 metres (460 and 660 ft.), the falls tumble into a deep plunge pool surrounded by lush foliage and rugged cliff faces.
Best visited on a guided tour or from the air due to its remoteness, the Jim Jim Falls are lovely any time of the year, but during the wet season, they are certainly at their most spectacular! The Falls – along with the nearby Twin Falls – are Kakadu’s most popular attractions and as such, the area has been well maintained and the 900 metre hike from the carpark to the plunge pool is clearly marked and relatively easy to traverse; however, there are a few obstacles along the way – such as boulders and sandy sections. Once you reach the bottom of the falls though, you’ll realise the scenic walk was worth every step – enclosed by steep cliffs on three sides, the waterfall cascades majestically into the cool, glassy water, perfect for swimming in.
Nearby, there’s a serene little pool with a sandy ‘beach’ area, perfect for picnics or just relaxing after a swim. The 6 kilometre (return) Barrk-Marlam Bushwalk will take you to the top of the falls for spectacular views of the below wilderness. The awe inspiring views are well worth the four to six hour hike up the steep hillside, which in itself is a lovely (albeit exhausting) walk. The views from above are a photographer’s dream and something you won’t forget in a hurry! There’s no doubt that some of Australia’s most spectacular locations are off the beaten track and Jim Jim Falls well and truly apply to this category!
